HOMELESS OUTREACH PROGRAM

Program Description:

The Homeless Outreach Program is an outreach effort to engage and assist the homeless "street" population of the Village of Hyannis in the Town of Barnstable and to work with the Town government entities and businesses impacted by this issue.

Goals: By partnering with the Business Improvement District, government entities, and the health and human services serving the homeless:

  • Provide outreach, advocacy, information and resources to the homeless population in and around the downtown Hyannis area
  • Engage and assist our homeless population in accessing shelter, substance abuse treatment, mental and physical health services, and other basic needs as identified
  • Create strategies to resolve barriers that preclude accessing services and benefits that will prevent continued homelessness for the chronic homeless street population
  • Help improve communication and cooperation between agencies servicing this targeted population and the business impacted by this issue

Milestones:

  • On average, 40% of those homeless on the streets engaged by the Main Street Outreach worker accessed shelter annually
  • Approximately 100 emergency needs of this population are ameliorated annually
  • The Main Street Outreach Program played an integral part in the development of two innovative programs serving the homeless, the Pilot House and the Overnights of Hospitality
